3D Art III, Project 1 - Week 2 Milestones (Finalized High-Res)

As promised with the last update, this week I completed the high resolution version of my mesh for the holographic globe project, which can be seen below.  This one went be fairly quickly, since I had already nearly gotten it done last week, and this week's work was mainly a matter of getting everything polished.  I do have some mild concerns about the upcoming game resolution mesh - how much detail am I going to be able to take away from this thing to down res it while still keeping the appearance?  But, I've been saving extra geometry from previous stages of completion all throughout the project, so I do have plenty to draw on for when I get to do that.  Frankly, what I've got for the globe and projection right now are probably good enough for the game resolution, too - with a total of 1088 triangles between them, they don't sit too heavily, and they need to look nice and smooth anyway.  I might just keep them as they are for the final version.  Speaking of, finishing early is giving me opportunity to prod at the materials stuff in-engine for Unreal, so I won't have to do it all at the end - I'll amend this post with anything noteworthy later.  In any case, here's what I got done this week:

Week 1 - Proxy model, start high resolution model - Deadline met!

Week 2 - Finish high resolution model - Deadline met!

Week 3 - Game res model, UVs, initial bake - Next Deadline!

Week 4 - Finalized materials and textures displayed in-engine.

POST TURN-IN UPDATE!
As promised, I did do some experimentation with the materials in-engine.  Here's where that's sitting, so far:

Common Art 3 - Sprint 1 Updates

With the models finalized during the last semester, the focus of this semester in general, and this sprint in particular, was on texturing the existing models.  In this spirit, I have gone ahead and textured nearly all the models in the back corner laboratory consistently with our established art style.  This can all be seen in the video.

3D Art III, Project 1 - Week 1 Milestones (Proxy, Start High-Res)

As I discussed in my last post, my goal for this week was to finish the proxy modeling stage, and begin on the High Resolution Modeling stage for my holographic globe.  I managed to achieve all that.  In all honestly, the high res model is mostly done - it just needs to be cleaned up some.  I'll probably be using some time during the next week of modeling to experiment with materials in Unreal to help create the right look for the hologram.  In any case, here is what I've gotten done by now:

Week 1 - Proxy model, start high resolution model - Deadline met!

Week 2 - Finish high resolution model - Next Deadline!

Week 3 - Game res model, UVs, initial bake.

Week 4 - Finalized materials and textures displayed in-engine.

3D Art III, Project 1 - References and Schedule

For this first project, I decided I was going to try to recreate an environmental asset from the game Evil Genius 2.  I landed on this idea because I greatly enjoyed that game, and think it has a nice art style.  I feel like I could do something interesting by experimenting with the clean, stylized art of the game.  I chose three asses from the game as my candidates for recreation:

1. Control Panel (large computer back with magnetic reels and satellite dishes, good for subtle animation)

2. Brainwashing Machine (very self-contained, so good for scope, and with animation potential)

3. Holographic Globe (interesting shape, interesting potential material work in-engine)

After consulting with Nick about my goals and preferences, it was decided that item #3, the Holographic Globe, would be what I'm making for the project.  With that in mind, my schedule for the project is going to stick pretty close to the default:

Week 1 - Proxy model, start high resolution model.

Week 2 - Finish high resolution model.

Week 3 - Game res model, UVs, initial bake.

Week 4 - Finalized materials and textures displayed in-engine.

Okay, so, it really hasn't been a week.  My Ventures project didn't need any more props or environment assets from me, so I wound u...
